Storytelling Surfaces At SingaPlural 2017
Ewins participated in SingaPlural 2017, the anchor event of Singapore Design Week, with the installation ‘Storytelling Surfaces’ designed by Italian architect-designer Egidio Panzera of Studio Architetto Egidio Panzera.
Designed and made with the overlapping of hundreds of Ewins’ flagship brand Veromobi’s latest Alba high-performance acrylic panel materials, visitors had fun capturing on their cameras all the effects created by this inspiring and colourful installation.
Conceived with the idea that this installation will speak today about the “stories” of future design which increasingly means speaking about connections, relationships, and interactions, Designer Egidio Panzera incorporated the ‘social’ element into the installation. From “selfie hole” to “see-through holes” that allow visitors to see the person on the other end, the installation encourages interactions and relationship-building through photos taken with or of the installation and sharing them digitally through social media.
Coloured, reflective, and interactive sheets to write on, draw on, or to simply leave a message on for the next design “pilgrim”, many visitors left their messages on the Veromobi Alba panels that were manufactured with a whiteboard finish. While most whiteboard surfaces come with a glossy finish in order to repel ink, Veromobi Alba’s whiteboard finish can be in matte, reducing glare and making the surfaces easier to read from.
“This is the most challenging installation we have done to date. Individual Veromobi Alba panels were cut in the factory with precise measurements and planning. These hundreds of panels are then painstakingly hung one by one to create the desired design. We are extremely pleased with the final visual effect and glad to see how our newly launched high-performance acrylic sheets could be presented in such an interactive and eye-catching way. We trust that the showcase will provide architects and designers with the inspiration on how these acrylic panels can create innovative products or interiors that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.” Said Mr. Mark Yong, Marketing Director of Ewins Pte Ltd.
“Many visitors were impressed by the variety of colours available and the properties such as scratch and wear-resistance. We will continue to work on introducing new finishes and colours to offer the industry with more design options,” Mr. Yong added.
During the talk ‘The Designer and The Maker’, Mr Yong and Designer Egidio Panzera shared how mutual trust brought them together to work on the installation. When asked about recommendations to achieve a good balance between artistic integrity and commerce in a project, Mr Yong shared how The Maker’s openness towards accepting ideas being put forth by the collaborating designer, and providing a clear design brief to the designer, are essential building blocks for the success of the project. On The Designer’s perspective, Mr Panzera suggested that The Designer must identify the purpose of a project with the consideration of the manufacturer’s capabilities, business objective and the market needs.
